Premature Ejaculation

One of the most common sexual problems in men is "Rapid Ejaculation" or "Premature Ejaculation". If a man ejaculates before his partner achieves orgasm in more than fifty percent of his sexual encounters, he suffers from premature ejaculation (Masters, W.H., Johnson, V.E. Human Sexual Response, Human Sexual Inadequacy). Other sex researchers have defined premature ejaculation as occurring if the man ejaculates within two minutes of penetration.

Biologically, men experience climax much earlier than women. They do so 2-3 minutes after penetration, in contrast to women who take their time (about 12-14 minutes). Today most therapists understand rapid ejaculation as occuring when a lack of ejaculatory control interferes with sexual or emotional well-being in one or both partners. About thirty percent of men suffer from premature ejaculation on a consistent basis.

Causes

Most men experience premature ejaculation at least once in their lives. Often adolescents and young men experience premature ejaculation during their first sexual encounters, but eventually learn ejaculatory control. There are also psychological factors that bring about early ejaculation. These include guilt, anxiety (lack of experience), or fear of sexually transmitted infections, potential pregnancy, etc.

Older men are also known to be able to control their ejaculation as compared with their younger counterparts. They credit it to their experience. Some physical illnesses, such as a prostate infection, are also known to induce premature ejaculation. In other instances, premature ejaculation is caused by a physical injury that affects the nervous system.

Physical causes of ejaculatory problems:

Diabetes mellitus
Multiple sclerosis
Spinal cord injury
Sympathectomy
Tabes dorsalis
Proctocolectomy
Stroke
Cystectomy
Aortoiliac surgery

Drugs which can interfere with erection or ejaculation:

Blood pressure medicine: Beta blockers, Verapamil (Calan), Reserpine (Hydropes), Clonidine (Catapres), Methyldopa (Aldomet)
Diuretics: Thiazides, Spironolactone (Aldactone), Hydralazine
Antidepressants: Prozac, Lithium, MOA's, Tricyclics
Stomach medicine: Tagamet and Zantac, plus other compounds containing Cimetidine and Ranitidine or associated compounds

Antipsychotics: Chlorpromazine (Thorazine), Pimozide (Orap), Thiothixine (Navane), Thiordazine (Mellaril), Sulpiride, Haloperidol (haldol), Fluphenazine (Modecate, Prolixin)
Heart medicine: Clofibrate (Atromid), Gemfibrozil, Diagoxin
Hormones: Estrogen, Progesterone, Proscar, Casodex, Eulexin, Corticosteroids
Gonadotropin releasing antagonists: Zoladex and Lupron
Cytotoxic agents: Cyclophosphamide, Methotrexate, Roferon
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories

Others including Alprazolam, Amoxapine, Chlordiazepoxide, Sertraline, Paroxetine, Clomipramine, Fluvoxamine, Fluoxetine, Imipramine, Doxepine, Desipramine, Clorprothixine, Bethanidine, Naproxen, Nortriptyline, Thioridazine, Tranylcypromine, Venlafaxine, Citalopram

Treatment

Most sex therapists prescribe a series of exercises to enable the man to gain ejaculatory control. While the exercises are intended for men who suffer from premature ejaculation, other men can use the exercises to enhance their sex lives.

So, how can you control yourself from ejaculating too quickly? One way is to exercise your PC (pubococcygeus) muscle, which is the primary “sexual muscle” that forms part of the pelvis. The PC muscle is largely involved with sexual functions such as ejaculation and orgasm. With regular exercise, this muscle can provide firmer and larger erections, powerful ejaculations and more intense climaxes.

So where is this muscle located? Try stopping the flow of your urine midway. The PC muscle, located between the anus and scrotum, is the one you contracts when you try to stop the flow of your urine.

How to go about exercising your PC muscles? Try clenching and releasing your PC muscle in ten-second periods. Perform three sets of this. Take a breather. Now, try the clench-and-release technique for five seconds. Perform ten sets of this. This time, try tightening the muscle for 30 seconds and relaxing for 30 seconds. Perform three sets of this.

This exercise is rather simple and easy to perform. You can do it by yourself - just about anytime and anywhere. You don’t need any device or contraption to exercise your PC muscle. But, like all exercise regimens, you need to commit to a routine devotedly.

So next time you and your partner are making love, try to go inside her and pause for awhile. Don’t move for several seconds; then try tightening and relaxing your PC muscle.

You also have to keep in mind that different women also prefer different types of sex. Some prefer the long and sensual approach; while others favor the pound-pound-pound approach. It’s always better to know your partner’s preference so that you can both enjoy an intimate sexual fun. Men who suffer from premature ejaculation should also practice other forms of relaxation, such as taking long, deep breaths.
